Greyson had found a taste of home. A joint that would deliver Chinese takeout and hot coffee. Neither were all that impressive, but he didnât feel safe leaving the scene of the crime until everything had gotten organized. And the food was good enough.
He and Rachel were out in the waiting area, eating. Team One had ordered delivery from other places more suited to their biology. Computer techs had ripped out all the hardware in the office space, while others were in back getting trained by their new friend, the Gâschtack male Irelyn Woldt, on how to maintain everything. That poor unfortunate would end up living here for an indeterminate time, but Rankev had assured him that cooperation now would go a long ways later when it came time to sentence him.
As in, if everything worked out, Woldt might spend a whole weekend in jail, just for the symbolism. The others were going away forever, as far as Greyson and Rankev were concerned.
A vehicle landed out in the parking lot, inside the area cordoned off. The facility would be as empty as it could get in another few hours, then locked up tight and run by Woldt and his trainees for however long it took a judge to sort out custody issues.
How the hell do you handle clones who might be one of several copies of someone running around? Especially if the rest have all been programmed to some task? Like murder.
Greyson figured that the rest were all more likely to exist in some sort of high-end, private brothel, if they werenât stalking someone.
Greyson stopped eating and watched the transport. It had sleeker lines that the brute heâd ridden in earlier. Power, wealth, importance.
He was no stranger to politicians showing up once everything was safe. Raid like this was a great way to get yourself on the evening news, Boston or Anic. Some things spanned species.
A man emerged from the back. Tall for a Gâschtack, though no broader. Lanky, like Greyson. Nice suit in the parking lot lights, sort of a steel blue with glittery, electric threads woven. Pretty, unlike the man himself. He looked to be built out of vitriol and barbed wire from the scowl on his face.
A woman emerged, but she wasnât a date. Also Gâschtack. Much older. Almost elderly, though she moved with grace and kept up with the taller man as they crossed the parking lot at a good clip.
Several others moved in a circle around them. Bodyguards. A variety species represented, but all had that hard edge of contained violence that he recognized.
Greyson nodded to Rachel and stood. Murphely Rankev had left a while ago, saying she was going to return to her office and make some calls.
Greyson assumed that this was the result. Hopefully, it would be a good one. Heâd eaten, and had some coffee to give him a growlier edge. Might be weeks before this case didnât require that from him.
Team One started to stand, but he waved them back to
